Qingdao was once known as the city of Jia’ao. Today, it is a sub-provincial city in the province of Shandong and is home to busy industrial and navy bases. It is also has a major brewery (Tsingtao brewery) within in its’ limits that brews one of the most popular beers in China. Qingdao has been named one of the top 10 cities to live in, in the entire country.
Qingdao sits on the south side of the Shandong Peninsula. The city enjoys mild winters and summers, which makes for pleasant weather all year long. The city is now a manufacturing hub, and is where Haer Corporation, a large electronics company, has its’ headquarters. The city is currently experiencing steady growth. Some of this growth may be contributed to the budding business growth. Business districts are being birthed and continue to show steady and deliberate growth. Technological, manufacturing, chemical processing and industrial economies are also becoming an important part of the city.
Five years ago, the population of the city was reported to include greater than seven million people, with nearly forty-percent living in the city proper, and another forty-percent, residing in cities that fall underneath the jurisdiction of Qingdao.
Qingdao might be most well known for the Tsingtao Brewery which was founded nearly 100 years ago. Tsingtao beer is the most famous beer in China and is enjoyed by individuals all over the world.
Qingdao boasts of both a strong German and Chinese influence in the city’s architecture, modern housing and road infrastructure. The city is practically a baby, when compared with other Chinese cities, being founded in 1897 as a fishing village. Many of the founding members were immigrants. Today the city has over thirty-eight ethnic minorities, although they are only a small portion of the city’s total population.
The city of Qingdao is also a very popular tourist attraction. Some great places to visit include the BaDu Guan, a great stop for Architecture buffs, May Fourth Square, St. Michael’s Cathedral (a German designed cathedral built in 1939), the Buddhist temple Zhanshan, Qingdao Underwater World, Qingdao Beer Museum, Lu Xun Park and the mountain of Laoshan.
